CHITRALI JOURNALISTS TRAINING WORKSHOP
Chitral is a mountain bound state in the northern area of Pakistan. It was the third and last destination of the Pakistan Press Foundation trainers team in its programme of holding three rural Journalists training workshops in this far flung part of Pakistan in collaboration with Freedom Forum of Hong Kong. In summer or winter Chitral is mostly accessible from Peshawar by Pakistan International Airlines Fokker Friendship flights, which must maneuver their way through high mountain peaks to reach Chitral valley. The only other alternate is a 12 hour torturous road journey over the most formidable mountain heights rising to almost 10,000 feet high Lawari pass top before descending into the cool, lush green Chitral valley, a veritable piece of paradise on earth. And in many months of winter the road is covered by thick layers of snow and therefore impassable while the flights are also mostly inoperable due to bad weather cutting off Chitral from the rest of Pakistan.

Most knowledge linked to irrigation and water management in these regions is often part of oral traditions. The case studies in this volume try to preserve some of this knowledge and present it to a wider audience. The volume covers for the first time a region spreading from the Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union to the Eastern Himalayas and Bhutan while also providing a new discussion about methods and working techniques in conducting field research.
